CHAIN UP NOT, WOMAN!: A poem by Bindu Unnikrishnan, Mrs Maharashtra 2023 ( Elite category)

CHAIN UP NOT, WOMAN!

By Bindu Unnikrishnan

Break free of the invisible chain, Oh woman! you too are born to fly!
Look at the strong wings you got, you might as well explore the sky.

The tenderness you show, the warmth you exude
You deserve the same, and of course, some respite
Breathe some, for the laundry can wait, it is your monotonous life that needs the spice.

Walk few steps, dance few more, listen to your heart, if it wants some more
In this lovely weather, leave that chore, bask in the sunshine which men adore.
Let him pack your picnic bag, while you go for a swim, or trek for a while,
Let that dinner be a surprise for you, the way you always did for him with a smile..

Chop that hair and style it through, don’t keep it long ’coz he told you to,
Wear the colour you always want, without conforming to your clan.
It is difficult to be always righteous and true, you can be sometimes vulnerable too.
Let the tears flow and make you light, the smile without reason sets you right.

The overslept Sunday, enjoy it too, pamper yourself, with goodies and a book
A massage or a spa, either one, get out of your home, every now and then.
Smell the mud and play in the rain, take that jump in a puddle on the way
Let not worries come closer to you, a day you deserve for yourself too

Don’t answer every question thrown at you, let some answers be brought by your silence too
If the dust persists on the wooden shelf, let know that others can dust it too
Just that you have the softest voice, let know that you can assert it too
For your mind deserves the same release, which a man any day commands through.

You are a designer’s creation, the perfect masterpiece,
Unique, beautiful, harbinger of peace.
For you can do things amazing for yourself ,
If you break the invisible chain that held you so well.

Bringing the unsaid thoughts of every woman into the forefront, Bindu Unnikrishnan inexorably reminds each woman to reclaim her rightful place in the world. No longer will chains, invisible or otherwise, bridle a woman to mundae chores or suppress her whimsy. Only by breaking free of all shackles, will she come into her own. A wonderful piece, aptly published to celebrate International Womens' Day on 8th March., it is a timely reminder to uphold our dignity even in testing times.
